The origins of Blues music have been well documented and discussed and the music stems from the close of the 19th century. The songs and music of the Blues originated from the African-American communities which could be found in the Deep South, with the songs common amongst slaves and prisoners. The blues depicted tales and everyday life for field workers and many were based around chants and shouts from the day. Legend has it that the first documented blues song was Yellow Dog Blues, which as written by William Christopher Handy in 1912. Handy was a bandleader and a cornet player but it is he who is given the credit for the first publication of a blues song.
